Their follow up album, Towards a Futile Existence, is something very different.

The guitar shredding mastery is still present and as impressive as it ever has been, but the style is harder to pin down. The single and title track is a good indication of what the rest of the album has in store. It begins with Gaia's clean vocals and keyboard led ballad, swaying with a melancholic feel, before the song launches into a heavy, progressive death metal section. Tracks like 'Memoirs of Madness' have a much more prog/melodic death thing going on, with tinges of black metal keys and vocals, while 'Pandemonium' wears its black metal influences on its long, spiky sleeves.

Unlike Pillars of Faith, which was immediately identifiable as Chuck Schuldiner worship (of which I heartily approve), Towards a Futile Existence is coming from many different influences. This makes it a harder listen, but an interesting one. I should really be overtly clear that the guitar magnificence you love from Escarion is still here in droves, making it lush ear candy for any metal fans who love their guitar wizardy. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of us.

BenPM - Nightbreed Metal Radio

Hornography - Perth Metal Clubtag:hornography-perth.com,2005:Post/72848732023-10-09T18:23:37+08:002024-02-04T16:57:22+08:00The Amenta - Plague Of Locus

Their first LP release since 2021's Revelator, Plague of Locus begins with a short intro which guides us into an album of eclectic covers. I like a good cover version as much as the next metalhead, but I much prefer when a band can take a well-known song and make it their own, and this all very much sounds like The Amenta. The first vocals we hear, in the opening of 'Sono L Antichristo', a Diamanda Galás song, sound like some kind of extraterrestrial latin, taking us into the otherworldly nightmare that we expect from these guys.

'Asteroid', a Killing Joke cover, has a banging industrial chorus, and there are big, industrial vibes across this album, but The Amenta still takes us back into those alien, dissident sounds that fans dig. Tracks like 'A Million Years', originally by Wolf Eyes, are experimental soundscapes from some kind of hell.

'Crystal Lakes', a Lord Kaos classic, brings back the black metal elements, with ludicrously fast drums making the track roll along like a ferocious army tank, while other parts slow down for some menacing moshing, all blended together seamlessly in what is my favourite of the album.

'Angry Chair' has a very different feel from the Alice In Chains original, which is welcome. Even the chorus, "I don't mind, yeaaaaaahhh", which is a vocal melody that seems like it would be hard to escape the earworm we all have of Layne Staley singing it, surprises with some cool time/feel changes and more Amenta-y harmonies.

Plague of Locus is eclectic, brutal, and alien, as The Amenta should be. Production wise, they've never sounded better. Some of the vocals feel like they're surrounding the room, over a bed of crisp and menacing instruments. The mix of styles on Plague should be jarring, but instead it all melds together well, and it all sounds like The Amenta.

BenPM - Nightbreed Metal Radio

Hornography - Perth Metal Clubtag:hornography-perth.com,2005:Post/72666882023-09-01T18:20:03+08:002024-02-04T16:58:14+08:00Triple Kill - Blackened Dawn

From the name and the logo, gotta say I expected flat out straight-forward thrash metal. And whilst some speed and riffs are there, I was surprised to hear a more modern melodic sound with a bit of substance and a unique style to take in. Kinda in the vein of Machine Head or Trivium, or maybe even a touch of Mudvayne or Karnivool (!?)… complete with slick production, orchestrations (from Andy Gillen of Mors Principium Est no less) and catchy powerful clean singing, but blended in with intricate guitars and drums it is certainly an interesting listen.

Triple Kill hail from Melbourne, their previous album is from 2018 and they've been hitting the live circuit pretty hard over the years. Now in 2023 they have dropped a well-written 9-track album in ‘Blackened Dawn’ with world-class sound. Lyrics are clever and vocal lines are very memorable. Then just when you start to relax to soak up the melodies you get blasted with some very cool riffs accompanied with a super tight engine room.

With the album release freshly out and currently touring Australia, you get the feeling Triple Kill are full of beans and motivated to give it a red hot crack. For fans of tons of various heavy styles from melodeath to prog, thrash and nu metal, it is delivered super professionally and is totally worth checking out!

8/10

Vincent van Goat

Hornography - Perth Metal Clubtag:hornography-perth.com,2005:Post/72518892023-08-04T19:18:06+08:002024-02-04T16:59:12+08:00Werewolves - My Enemies Look and Sounds Like Me

Werewolves have been consistently and frequently pumping out solid releases since their 2020 debut The Dead Are Screaming. This super trio of some of Oz metal’s most brutal musos should be familiar to any fans of fast death metal. Dave Haley (Abramelin, Psycroptic, Ruins, The Amenta), Matt Wilcock (Abramelin, The Bezerker, ex-Akercocke), and Sam Bean (The Bezerker, The Senseless) are no strangers to throwing down fast, intense metal.

The first track of their latest album throws you into the deep end. There are no samples or keys to slide us into this den of werewolves. ‘Under the Ground’ kicks the album straight into a fast, blasting riff, which ends with the sample, “You’re a fucking pathetic cunt”. Cheers, fellas.

Straight away, the boys are telling us that the tone of last year’s track ‘We Are Better Than You’ hasn’t gone anywhere. This is a big heavy middle finger up to the metal world. Werewolves play fast and heavy and don’t care if you like it or not.

I should stipulate, this isn’t some meathead full speed ahead noise (although I would probably enjoy that). The riffs and changes in these songs are testament to the talented, “seasoned” (not old) musicians putting this together, and there is enough variety throughout this new one to keep it interesting. ‘Destroyer of Worlds’ is smack bang in the middle and slows things down slightly for a moment, but only to build a menacing sound to lead us into another speedy aural assault. This isn’t someone’s art project or concept album. Werewolves are here to tear you apart with intense riffage and speed. The production is fantastic too. I can hear every skin hit, every string plucked, and it’s all loud and clear as day.

Werewolves is born of, in Sam’s words, “no effort at all”. It’s a fun project made by very talented metalheads, and it absolutely works. My Enemies Look and Sound Like Me is Werewolves’ fourth full length since 2020. I can name more than a few bands who have released far less than that during a much longer time period, and with far less diminishing returns. I feel like Werewolves should keep striking while the iron is hot. Every release has been an improvement on the last, and My Enemies is no exception.

Hornography - Perth Metal Clubtag:hornography-perth.com,2005:Post/71977262023-04-27T17:31:54+08:002024-02-04T17:00:12+08:00Choof - Dimwitted Amoral Exploitation
Labelling themselves as 'outlaw' grind, Melbourne's Choof are an abrasive bunch to say the least.

Their awesomely titled debut EP ‘Dimwitted Amoral Exploitation’ has just been released, and with 8 songs clocking in at around 14 mins, they ain't mucking around at getting their point across.

Lyrically, it's some left of centre shit and this EP is a collection of some pretty rugged stuff such as serial killers, human cruelty, necrophiles & exorcisms. Certainly suits the corrosive nature of the music.

First track 'Blasphemous Execution' kicks off on a dire black metal sounding intro, before exploding in an all out grind / punk frenzy and before you know it, the opening track is done.

Phew. Next up is the first single and video to be released 'Yoghurt Cups'. A coarsley discordant grooved out nasty minute of music. My ear aches.

'Mortuary Rats', dare I say is the catchiest track on the EP, with the middle section of the song conjuring a need to bang the head and push people around. Track highlight for me.

Rest of the EP winds around a path of fast punk, discordant grind, power violence all intermingled with spots of sludgy groove. It's certainly raw, but the recording has been produced well enough for riff clarity.

Vocally it's a trade off of harsh ear piercing shrieking and some kind of munged out yelling, which is highly entertaining and I can only picture how good these guys would be to see live.

All in, a painfully good and fun listen.

7/10

Gary Goat

Hornography - Perth Metal Clubtag:hornography-perth.com,2005:Post/71857712023-04-07T20:34:27+08:002024-02-04T17:01:06+08:00Orpheus Omega - Portraits
Melbourne's Orpheus Omega have given us a new EP in ‘Portraits’ and boy did they all sharpen their tools before going into the studio for this one! They have trully excelled themselves by turning it up a notch in all aspects of the game. From the riffery, to the vocals, to the shreddery, to the songwriting and production, in what I would say is their peak release to date.

In an interesting and unique concept 'Portaits' is a 5-track EP with every member contributing one song each on a personal level & their story so far. Also interesting is the EP is littered with guest appearances Andy Gillion (Ex-Mors Principium Est), Bjorn ‘Speed’ Strid (Soilwork), Jukka Pelkonen and Markus Vanhala (Omnium Gatherum) and Jim Grey (Caligula’s Horse). Guests spots can always be hit and miss, but each here has added their own flavour to these songs and it all works so well.

Orpheus Omega have kept their melodic death metal roots, but have definitely explored a more 'modern' sound with some slight 'core' elements in making huge clean vocal segments building up to catchy as hell singalong choruses. Unlike some acts who have tried such paths but fail miserably due to their inability to actually sing, Orpheus Omega have nailed it. And I wouldn't say these evolvements have made the band any 'softer' as there is still a barrage of heavy as fuck riffery & enough doses of blast beats to keep this to a melodic death heavy standard. It's just layered with a bunch of outstanding dynamics.

Highlight tracks are the catchy as all hell 'Within In These Walls', some neo classical thrashiness in 'The Prophecy' and the final slab of groove and brutality in 'Exist To Observe'.

Any fan of melodic metal and melodic death metal should without a doubt be grabbing this and after this release you could safely say Orpheus Omega are Australia's standout band of the genres.

There really isn't much to fault in this EP & now the benchmark has been set, it will be killer to hear what the band can deliver on the next full length!

Gary Goat 9/10

Hornography - Perth Metal Clubtag:hornography-perth.com,2005:Post/71528392023-02-13T14:41:00+08:002024-02-04T17:03:12+08:00MUNT - Pain Ouroboros
Starting as a death/grind band in 2016, Melbourne's MUNT have been evolving into a terrifying beast and now in 2023 present their fourth EP ‘Pain Ouroboros’.

This 5 track EP shows Munt at their newest and finest, with a hybrid mix of all things extreme, and the opening track ‘Children of Delirium’ immediately displays exactly that. There's no messing around here, like a punch to the face it's straight into a cacophony of energy and relentless aggression.

‘Vengeful March’ has a video of the band in action, and a great representation of Munt's blending of extreme genres. ‘Zero Sum’ is another example of Munt's various tastes, with a venomous black metal atmosphere whilst being short and sharp like a grindcore tune and packed full of riffs.

‘Communion of Thorns’ is frantic and vicious, with fast paced chunky chuggs moving into chaotic blasts and riffing. Closing with ‘Apostate Sermon’, Munt show their ability to infuse melodic metal amongst the most extreme death/black rampage.

The latest Munt EP will please fans of wild extreme death metal with no boundaries, stuff like The Bezerker and Anaal Nathrakh come to mind. But all extreme metal fans should be able to find something they like in ‘Pain Ouroboros’. Any fellow hobbit-heads out there will have noticed the incredibly breathtaking scenery. The snowy mountain ranges and awe-inspiring landscapes of New Zealand are on full display, in full HD glory. Who would have thought such guttural, ugly music like Vicissitude could come from such a beautiful country?

Vicissitude’s Neolithic Necrocannibals is a sludgy, heavy assault on the ears, and I was into it. It fluctuates between a kind of black-thrash to a slow-groove death metal act. Fans of ‘pure cvlt’ black metal shouldn’t shy away though. This isn’t tech death or anything too polished.

Vicissitude show their black metal love throughout. The production is good and meaty, but not too slick. It still sounds like an actual band swathing through the mud and bones. The vocals are a mix of lower than low and black metal pitchy growls. The drum thumps and nice and loud, and the guitar riffage pushes the whole thing along well. The tracks are numbered ‘NN I’, ‘NN II’ and so on, and the logo is nearly indecipherable. These are all staple black metal traits which made me want to revisit this album after listening a couple of times to review.

I think the strength of Neolithic Necrocannibals is in its slower, sludgier moments. It has a “mosh slowly while very drunk” feel, and I love it. NN III had a particularly great groove, which ended in feedback and led into the blasty onslaught of the intro to NN IV, while NN VI slows riiiiiiiight down at one point, punching you in the gut with its drums and chord stabs.

This is raw, but not so raw that it sounds like it was recorded through a toilet door. It’s a great listen. New Zealand already graced us with the amazing Stälker, and now we can safely add Vicissitude to the list of killer, blackened bands from the Long White Cloud. Saying that, once Vicissitude are done with the cloud, it might not be so white anymore.

It's thunderous, it's fuzz filled & the low tuned, thickly coated riffage bursts out far & wide. For a four piece band, the sound is colossal!

The album starts with a short dark acoustic piece aptly named 'Misery', before unloading into one of strongest tracks 'Hordes'. The first five minutes is a rolling swirling mass, with wah soaked solo's, before divebombing into a crushing doomed out ending. Purely epic. Following this, is the standout & strongest track 'Breathe'. Choc full of bass groove, rolling riffs, grizzly vocals & a solid rockin' drumbeat. Feels like it should be on the soundtrack of an in the middle of nowhere road trip movie & if this song doesnt get you moving, you're either dead or incredibly boring.

From thereon in, the the album continues on it's unmerry rumbling stoner/doom way. A dense sonic swarm, unpredictably twisting & turning at any given time. A solid strong point is the songs never feel repetitive with each one having it's own distinct flavour & ride. Making it an engaging and cranking listen right through to the end.

Vocalist Cam Crichton delivers an outstanding performance possessing a great range from the Nick Cave like soothing tones of 'The Ballad Of Jock Brown' through to the gritty gruff aggression on the aforementioned 'Hordes' & another land mover & shaker in 'Monolith'.

If the stoner/doom/sludge realm piques your interest & you've grooved out to the riff bombs of Kyuss, Sleep, Electric Wizard & of course Black Sabbath, then it'll be very hard not to like Motherslug.

Throw it on loud & clear out your ear holes!

Fast melodic death in the vein of The Haunted and The Black Dahlia Murder, crossed with the thrashy death stylings of Revocation or even a bit of Lamb Of God.

Aside from the standard guitar dominance, it is immediately noticable that the popping drums and punching kicks are tight as hell, there's even the odd blast in there.

The vocals are super aggressive at all times and works well throughout. There are some really nice guitar harmonies, and the solos are oozing with sweeps and squeels.

Some of my favourite moments on the EP include the big chorus in 'God Is Beneath Us', superb melodies in 'Rivers', and the Behemoth-esque fist pumping start of 'The Last Nail'!

PRIMITIVE have been gigging for a few years and released an EP and a single since 2017. This one is a really solid effort and big step up, so let's hope they will be back with more soon!

The eighth PSYCROPTIC album? Shit yeah!

You know what you’re getting with this reliable death metal act. Riffs, so many bustling death metal riffs played with utter precision. Backed up with drums tight as buggery and the angriest of yelling. And you get it straight away here on DIVINE COUNCIL with the first track 'Rend Asunder', the sickest technical riff that moves into the most rockin death metal groove.

But whilst we know what we’ve come to expect from Psycroptic, they still manage to keep every album sounding unique. Some darker moments like ‘Enslavement’ break up the relentlessness, or the evil synth in ‘Exitus’, and the wicked acoustic stuff in 'The Prophets Council’.

The guitar picking feels quicker and tighter than ever before. And so too the blasts and kicks at times. A huge call considering the technicalities proven through their back catalogue. The songwriting seems stripped back which opens up space to let these wizards do their thing. The mix of extreme sections into grooves are just so cool, 'This Shadowed World' being a great example, crazy riffage at the start then an absolute monster bustle near the end.

DIVINE COUNCIL also keeps interesting with a couple of guest vocalists. Jason Keyser of Origin features at various times throughout, plus even some female vocals courtesy of Amy Wiles that sit nicely in the mix.

If somehow you haven’t heard PSYCROPTIC before, it’s almost like the guitars of Necrophagist with the groove and aggression of Decapitated. But with their own identifiable flare.

Having grown up with Psycroptic it has been an honour watching them evolve over the last 20 years and they are a total inspiration to all Aussie metalheads. DIVINE COUNCIL is one mean feat!

Werewolves see, Werewolves do. If you are a Werewolves fan by now, you should know what to expect. If you are not, jump aboard if you dare.

"From The Cave To The Grave" is the 3rd bombardment discharged from this angry pack in as many years, not to mention the EP "Death Metal" they pinched out early this year.

And a formula seems to be apparent. They don't like writing more than 9 songs and they don't like the albums clocking in at more than 35 mins.

Actually they don't seem to like much at all apart from decimating the heeder with a torrential downpour of loathing and hostility.

Album opener 'Self-Help Book-Burning' blasts straight out the gate at a scarily frantic pace, suitably followed by 'We Are Better Than You' and the whirlwind continue on from there.

Half way through there is some respite with the bpm's turned down on 'Harvest Of Skulls', and a brooding black metal aura sweeps in, but it doesnt last long, 4 mins later, the furious chest beating returns with 'Oedipus Tyrannus' and the rest of the album demolishes.

Shaped from straight up death metal, shades of black metal and doused with a side of technicality, Werewolves is for animals out there who like their metal extreme, fast, raw and tightly executed.

On par with previous releases and the perfect album to play at the workplace if you don't want anyone talking to you.

We got a good one here folks. The three miscreants outta Perth creating FLATUS have been quietly delivering studio material for the last 6 years or so, and building their name as a Carcass-worship act. However, their latest effort THWOMP! proves that over these years their sound has been developing into something of their own, and something very very cool.

With the member’s backgrounds in death, grind and black metal, these three genres vividly come through in the songwriting of THWOMP! more than ever. This is where it works nicely with the Carcass influenced chord progressions and vocal stylings, as we now just get a taste of that delicious sound but strangely enough it has a unique and identifiable touch to it.

Whilst this is no doubt a heavy grinding release, there are some absolute masterful melodeath-styled and black metal melodies that really seem to take FLATUS to the next level. The Carcass influence is well and truly embedded (Just soak up that intro to ‘Celebrity Heads’, and even a cover of ‘Swarming Vulgar Mass Of Infected Virulency’), but there ain’t no mistaking this is something of their own.

There is plenty to digest, and some super killer sections that make you want to listen over and over again. Just check out the bustling riffs, unexpected melodies, and desperate howls in the ‘The Sophomoric Subjugation Of Spondulicks’, or the broken black metal chords straight into tasty licks and grindy grooves in the ‘Bubonic Boogie’. Then topping it all off with the relentless extremities of ‘Molecular Cauterisation & Cranial Chernobyl’.

Perhaps one of the standout things with this release, is that you can tell these blokes are having a good time. The themes and lyrics are quirky, artwork is trippy, the samples sit well, the recording sounds fun, and the overall vibe is an absolute winner.

Ripper Effort. Hard to fault. 10 thumbs up from me.

Metal, and black metal in particular, has been forever linked to nature. There are endless album covers with grim, black and white photos of trees, and music videos featuring corpse painted bands doing their thing in the middle of the forest.

Lithik's 'Lithification of Time' takes that love of nature one step further. Rather than singing about how much we all love Satan, the lyrics are solely about nature and its wonders.

Ray McGill, the one man driving force behind Lithik, has a Geology degree, and his love of rocks and the Earth shines through everything from the lyrics, to the album artwork, to the music video.

The grooves on 'Lithification of Time' are slow and doomy, akin to Solstafir or Paradise Lost, and it's great to hear this style come out of Australia. One small criticism would be that I found the vocals too high in the mix at times, but that doesn't take away from what is otherwise a decent, moody release. The bass lines cut through a wash of guitar riffs and cymbals, creating a groove that pushes these doomy, black metal tinged tunes along nicely. There are rockier moments too though, particularly in 'New Moon' and 'Weather the Storm', so if 100% slow doomy stuff isn't your thing, you might dig the variety here.

This is an interesting first release and I look forward to what comes next from Lithik.

Here we have the debut album from hard-hitting and very active Perth live act AS LIGHT DECAYS. The album is called SYSTEM OF DIVISION and it’s out 13th November 2021.

They describe themselves as groove / thrash metal, and these days when you hear that it can make you think something like an alternative/metalcore crossover.. But what these guys are doing is actually like the old-school death/thrash of Sepultura or Obituary, blended with groove from some older hardcore stuff like Biohazard, Madball or even Hatebreed.

The sound is really refreshing and not something we hear a lot of anymore. The guitar riffs are heavy and tough, energetic and catchy without trying to get complicated or technical.

The music is huge and heavy, easy to headbang to and even easier to stomp and mosh to. Also an excellent vocal performance, delivered passionately and anthemic that could really take the live show to the next notch of crowd interaction.

An album totally worth checking out, particularly for those into old-school metal and hardcore, with a modern touch. Superb effort for a debut album.

Boasting 13 tracks of pure melodic aggression doused in groove, thrashiness and hate, this album is an outstanding improvement from previous releases and easily sits up there as their best.

Each track is firmly stuffed with a barrage of killer, memorable and very well played riffs, the solid and precise drumming keeps everything stomping along perfectly, and the vocal delivery is first rate showcasing a broad range of hostile styles, all making for one hell of an angry and ferocious offering. You get the feeling a huge amount of thought has been put into every aspect of this album, the riffs, the songwriting, the time changes and dynamics, the vocal lines, drum patterns and all blended together with an impressive and clear production that will, unless you’re a non metal muppet, no doubt get your fist pumping and your head banging.

It’s difficult to pick the top tracks on this album as I genuinely think each track is a strong as the next. But given Kimura delivered videos for the tracks Sharpen The Bones, Hangman and another one to come for Hell Is Coming, these could be your picks to wrap your ears around first.

If metal in the vein of Lamb Of God, Machine Head, Trivium, Chimaira, Pantera and anything else with a hefty slab of groove and aggression is right up your alley, then you should 100% get yourself all over this release!

Stretch that neck, crack those knuckles, and get ready to move. The new album from Melbourne’s THE ASCENDED is out on September 17 and it’s a banger!

This four piece have been around since 2014, releasing two EP’s, a S=single and a debut album during that time. The second full length THE DARK is ready to blow those out of the water, certainly their most pro sounding release to date.

The huge production is immediately evident (recorded by the band themselves), which is further helped by the solid performances, pulling off a tight and punchy attack. The sick guitar tone is low tuned and heavy, presenting a very moshworthy metalcore sound. Some very cool dual guitar lead harmonies break away from the chuggy breakdowns from time to time which works well.

The vocals are aggressive, sometimes with a semi-growled delivery combining a tinge of clean melody. Other times straight out yells, and often the choruses are sung with a hypnotic darkness.

Nothing too ground breaking here, but there are 10 cool tracks done well, giving fans of heavy energetic tunes plenty to enjoy and bang their head along to. It’s reminiscent of a metalcore sound from 10 or so years back, but with obvious influences of thrash and groove stuff like Pantera, Lamb of God & Parkway Drive. Sounds like they had a rad time putting this album together, and it’s a heap of fun to listen to.

Melbourne’s DESECRATOR released their first album back in 2011 and have been flying the flag for Aussie thrash ever since. This four piece has been up there with Aussie metal’s most hardworking acts over the last decade, seemingly always on the road with a fanbase that is ever growing. Now in 2021 they present their third album SUMMONING which is another great slab of what they do best, but with a bit more maturity and refinement in songwriting making it arguably their sickest effort yet!

Opening with a creepy and intense barrage of sounds introduction, it then blasts straight into the title track which is also the first single from the album. As some may have heard on the recent music video for this song, this represents the unique thrash sound that DESECRATOR have perfected - Fast power cord transitions, catchy harmonised licks and plenty of trem picking, matched up with tight double kicks and punchy toms and snares, they got it all covered.

The clean vocals have a heap of gruff toughness to them, not indifferent to classic stuff like Testament or Exodus for example, with an evident Aussie accent for that unique touch. The constant energy and fast tempo of the guitars and drums will please fans of modern speed stuff like Stalker and Evil Invaders.

The thrashy insanity continues throughout tracks like Hate At First Sight (another one with a ripper new video), Manic and The Devil You Know, all oozing with speed and energy.
Tom Thumb first splurted their creamy goodness into our ears with their 2019 split release “Thy Kingdom Cum” and what a treat it was. Those ten tracks have now been followed up with a whopping 21 song release, “Licence to Spill”.

Dick Dribbley and Jack Cock know how to utilise their tools to give maximum aural pleasure. These dapper gentlemen come together to make sweet, salty tunes that chug along at a groovy pace. To be honest, their musical prowess and riffs are possibly too good for the subject matter, but that kind of makes the whole thing funnier and more entertaining. Most tracks feel like they’re over in the blink of an eye, but you know what they say, “It’s not about the size. It’s what you do with it that matters”. Listeners will certainly be left with infectious, unforgettable hooks stuck in their ears.

Tom Thumb’s music is littered with seemingly random samples which take on whole new hilarious meanings in this context; the best example perhaps being the opener “Sperm Wail”, giving some biblical text a much more entertaining and spicy interpretation. Footy, cooking, AFL, even children's nursery rhymes get the Tom Thumb treatment. I'll never look at 'Three Blind Mice' the same way again. No area is off limits and Tom Thumb will get their fingers into every possible place they can find. As long as it’s rich and creamy, they don’t mind.

If you enjoy brutal grooves and large slabs of meat garnished with white, creamy sauce, then Tom Thumb’s “Licence to Spill” is right up your alley.

To put it bluntly, this shit is off it’s fucking head! They reckon their own brand of violent, slamming death metal could grind the beak off an ibis. Understatement if you ask me, this could grind the tusk off a woolly mammoth! And what is more remarkable is there is no use of guitar on this album whatsoever. 12Gauge Rampage are a lethal 3 piece extreme outfit with drums, vocals, bass & every distorted riff you hear on this album has been ground out by bass only. Not that you could pick it at all, which goes to tell how ridiculously good the bass playing is on this album.

Charging out of the Blue Mountains of NSW, 12Gauge Rampage spawned their musical ‘journey’ just 18 months ago. So the fact they have found their feet on the very first album is an exceptional feat in itself. Many bands take years & multiple records to find the own sound, but these guys have smashed out a feral, abrasive mix of grind, death, slam with a decent smattering of groove & machine gun like drumming straight off the bat. As well as the insanely sick bass work, the vocal variety & performance should also be noted with a tip top mix of savage throat wrecking screeching to tough as fuck death, to guttural lows.

12Gauge Rampage certainly don’t mince their words whilst also having a deliciously Aussie flavour with song titles such as ‘Killed More Cunts Than Covid’, ‘Long Necks & Dole Cheques’, ‘Your Fucken Mate’ & ‘Wouldn’t Even Piss On Ya’. With very efficient song crafting, the average song length is about 2.30 mins so they definitely don’t piss about either. This is a harsh, unforgiving album from start to finish & once you’ve listened to it once, you’re gonna wanna chuck it on again.

Too many bands use the term unique in their bio’s & press releases & for the most part, none of them are. Far from it. But here with 12Gauge Rampage I am thankful to say we do have something unique & well worth giving a go.

Easily one of the best albums this cunt has heard this year!

Orpheus Omega and Triple Kill, both from Melbourne, are about to embark on an east coast to and to coincide with this, they have collaborated to produce a split covers EP.

Titled ‘Career Suicide’, the EP consist of a collection of 90’s pop punk songs from their collective youth, with each band contributing 3 tracks. What you’ll find on here are heavier renditions of some the biggest hits of that era from Blink 182, Fountains Of Wayne, Green Day, Avril Lavigne, The Living End & Paramore.

If you are the kind of metal head that eats bullet belts for breakfast & only smile when someone dies, then you are 666% going to hate this. This is an EP purely made for fun & if you are more of a fruit loops kind of breakfast eater who grew up in the 90’s & partied on to the huge pop punk hits of that time, then you should enjoy what has been served up here.

The songs have been ‘heavied up’ somewhat with each band adding their own little flavours to each track. Recorded & produced at Monolith Studio’s (Chris Themelco lead guitarist of Orpheus Omega), the end result is a slick, well recorded & mixed EP. The EP cover is a direct rip of Green Day’s ‘Dookie’ album & adds to the fun element of this release.

This really is only for the diehard fans of both Orpheus Omega & Triple Kill & for anyone who grew up in the pop punk era who might appreciate some ‘metal’ covers of their past favourite bands. I won’t rate it from a metal purists point of view as it would not be too kind, therefore I will put my party hat on & rate it for what it is.

BELETH, a 2 piece studio act out of Australia’s east coast are here with their debut album SILENT GENESIS.

On hearing the band name I was expecting grim black metal, but in fact this is some heavy chunky stuff in the vein of Kataklysm, Lamb of God or Devildriver.

This is extreme metal overall, but there is no shortage of solid groove riffage played tight in with a very punchy drum sound. The occasional melodic riffs stick out too, which tie the songs together well. Also the odd guitar lead too for good measure.

Angry growls dominate the vocal performance, ensuring the album is ferocious throughout. Some catchy vocal lines at times give it an anthemic feel, which would be really cool live, should they develop into a live band one day.

The album has been released through multiple record labels plus support from various PR agencies, so it’s getting plenty of attention so expect to hear plenty more from these guys!

A little bit more variation throughout the album wouldn't go astray, but a promising start from BELETH, no doubt with the ability to kick things up a notch as they develop further, so looking forward to their future releases.

As far as death metal goes, Crypt Crawler’s ‘Future Usurper’ is as about as old school as it gets.

In the modern day where it all seems to be about cramming as many drum beats & notes into a single bar as you can, it’s refreshing as fuck to hear a younger band churning out classic sounding late 80’s / early 90’s death metal that sounds as good now as it did back then. If you dig the USA & Swedish death metal scenes of that time, then this is 666% worth listening too.

What we have on ‘Future Usurper’ is Crypt Crawler punching out grooving rolling riffs you can actually hear, backed by sensible solid drumming with great rhythmic changes that beckons a mighty headbang.

Add to this a top notch vocal performance & well crafted, carefully constructed guitar solo’s that reek of dark eerie melodies that match the lyrical content & the overall feel of the album very well indeed.

It’s a difficult task to pick any standout tracks as the album is full of killer and zero filler, but my horns would go with Inherent Complexion, Future Usurper & Choir Of Reprieve.

Yngwie Malmsteem may never understand what less is more means, but Crypt Crawler certainly do.

Add this one to your Aussie death metal collection!

For those unknown to Dr Colossus, their riffage leans toward the doom, rock, stoner area and they are devout Simpson nerds. Which may explain to some of you, the album title & the fact they supported the Ned Flanders themed band Okilly Dokkily in 2020. As lighthearted & silly as it may seem, the music itself is far from that. What we have is a rolling, rollercoaster ride of epic proportions by a bunch of guys who know how to put together a catchy & cleverly written song. There is some seriously good stuff here. Mountainous & meaty down-tuned riffs interlaced with moving clean sections, tasty thick guitar solos, cracking drums, the odd classic 70’s keyboard sound & the vocals, well. Vocalist Dr John knows his shit and delivers an outstanding mix of dirty rock fuelled grit that seamlessly intertwines with soaring cleans.

Standout tracks to me are definitely Pickabar, which I think any band of this style would be proud to own, Sex Cauldron & Hummingbird Of Bengal.

For those who may need more reference points, if you are into anything that remotely sounds in the vein of Orange Goblin, Kyuss, Electric Wizard, Monster Magnet and the likes, do yourself a favour & get involved with Dr Colossus.

Eurkuh is a one-man black metal project out of Wagga Wagga, ‘the place of many crows’. This four track EP, ‘Not At All’ is the debut release from the project, and is a very impressive piece of work for a new act.

It is grim and filthy, dark and evil, played at a mid-pace tempo and with clearer production than one might expect from a solo black metal studio project. The style wouldn’t be completely out of place next to certain tunes from Hate Forrest, Deathspell Omega, Leviathan, or Judas Iscariot, although not quite as fast or aggressive. The heavy parts are great, and the vocals delivered solidly, but perhaps the standout parts are the quieter acoustic sections, with some super brooding chorus/delay sounds on the guitars.

In keeping with the theme of it’s origin, the artwork is very cool with what looks like a rams head on a crows body, I can only imagine a clever take at an image of black metal from Wagga.

‘Not At All’ was released in January 2021, and can be purchased for any price from eurkuh.bandcamp.com

The Amenta have been around in one form or another since 1997, and their sound has changed a lot since the Crucible of Agony days. The opening track even teases an earlier black metal sound, before quickly ripping off that familiar bandage to let the production and weight of Revelator take over.

Revelator is their fourth album and it is a heavy hitting, different experience. I think the best way to describe the style would be 'eclectic', and that is in no way an insult. Revelator seamlessly melds black metal blasts (An Epoch Ellipsis, Psoriastasis), groovy, almost doomy riffs (Sere Money), and bleak soundscapes (Wonderlost). The album manages to move throughout these different sounds while still holding a single voice or band identity, which is no easy feat.

Some of the vocals are so chanty that I can imagine them being belted out by a crowd of Meshuggah fans, but then they're replaced by a clean, Kristoffer Rygg-sounding lyric, which then cuts to a post-apocalyptic electronic melody that sounds like it's been damaged from a nuclear blast. On paper, this sounds like a jarring mess, but it honestly all pulls together to create a big, dark whole.

If I had to pigeon hole The Amenta's Revelator, I'd say it's 'post black metal', but I think that's only because it has its own sound and doesn't easily sit in another genre. If you want something interesting that isn't afraid to blast your ears and then take you to an eerie electro-desert landscape, then you'll devour this.

EOS are a relatively new Australian black metal band. I mean, I assume they are because this is their first release and they're 'online footprint' does not give much information. Even in their band promo shot, they look like members of Anonymous, indistinguishable from one another. That being said, a little mystery never hurt anyone, and The Great Ascension speaks for itself.

This is majestic, atmospheric black metal, all with a heavy sound. The drums are huge and blasty, the riffs have that sad, minor key sound that any black metal band worth their salt needs, and the pained, strained vocals top it off perfectly.

'Valkyrie' has that hypnotic effect that you get from a couple of repeated BM riffs within a song, 'Amour Propre' goes from viking riffy to viking doomy, and 'Black Winter Bloodbath' is a moshy, moody assault on the ears.

I listen to a lot of metal, black metal in particular, and this is honestly one of my favourite new black metal releases in a long time. It's heavy, but not to the detriment of that immensely tragic sound. It's been on high rotation for me and is definitely worth checking out.

On this eery and brooding day, overlooking the rain and clouds, seems the perfect time to check out the latest album from Perth’s Jupiter Zeus, ‘Central Ave’.

Jupiter Zeus play a brand of heavy rock, done with a doomy stoner type of vibe. It wouldn’t be out of place next to certain eras of Operth, Katatonia or Type o Negative.

In this, the follow up to 2014’s ‘On Earth’ album, the band return with 8 tracks that aren’t dissimilar to their previous stuff or anything new or groundbreaking, but rather they have just focused on delivering a bunch of cool songs in the style they do best.

It’s guitar driven, plenty of riffs that are both powerful and trippy, with dashes of reverbs and delays. This sits well with the clean ethereal vocal stylings that follow the dark riff patterns.

The band have released a music video for the track ‘The End Is Nigh’ that has plenty of earth and nature footage that gives a great introduction to their music for those who haven’t heard them before.

A very solid album that’s definitely worth checking out.
Had dinner yet? No? Good.

Bluddypop were born a few years back out of the rear end of a few other disgusting grind acts. They want their music to make you feel sick, and the latest split with Bile Cannon does exactly that.

Bile Cannon on the other hand, that’s a brand new project, taken only slightly more seriously, and a slightly different style of grind.

Let’s give this disc a spin shall we. Hang on, let’s take another look at that front cover first. Ok let’s go throw up on ourselves. Alright, now press play.

The Shit n' Spit Split starts with 7 tracks from Bluddpop. If you’re into filthy grind with dirty riffs and horrid vocals, then strap yourself in for a wild ride. Fans of Romperprop, Cliteater and Urine Festival are gonna be stroking their salami over this one. The standard person would hear this and think it sounds like an audio recording of their grandad in the toilet, but those with an acute ear will find that it’s catchy, rocky, bluesy, and heavy as fuck all at the same time. You know what you’re in for with track titles like ‘Force Fucked With a Tin of Beans’, ‘Naked Handstands for Grandma’, and ‘I’d Rather Have AIDS than Kids’.

The next 7 tunes cum courtesy of the one-piece project known as Bile Cannon. This is grindcore that resembles stuff more like Napalm Death, Carcass, Rotten Sound type of stuff. Clearer riffs, plenty of energy and shitload of yelling. You’d be forgiven for thinking this music is almost serious, until you hear some of the samples and realise you’re up to the track ‘Cosby, Stills & Gash’. People from Perth might also recognise this angry screamy voice from an old (very old) “band” named Choke. Oh, and why not throw in a SOD cover for good measure.

These two pooper groups have tried to make a really shitty release that everyone will hate, but unfortunately it’s actually pretty good. Any fans of death or grind, or anyone who loves a bit of fun, it's worth getting your grubby mits on this one.

There are some metal bands that meticulously craft their songs. Spending months or even years perfecting the music, the lyrics, the multiple layers of instruments & tracks & making sure each single note on the album has a purpose. There are some that that like to create a certain atmosphere or mood, captivating the listener with melodies, harmonies & soundscapes that resonate within.

And then there are bands like WEREWOLVES. A pack of heathens hell bent on sputtering out a barrage of ridiculously fast, furious, spiteful riffs, with little thought or tact & with perhaps the soul goal of rupturing some part of your anatomy.

This is about as straight up and callous as death metal gets. No frills, no journeys, no extra fat & no fucking about. They get in, do the job & fuck right off.
What A Time To Be Alive is a 35 minute slab of ultra barbarity and hate. The production suits, raw but audible. The playing is ruthless, but precise & very well executed.

There are a few moments of respite from the aural abuse, but for the most part, it's rowdy & hostile. If cavemen or neanderthals could've written death metal, this would have been the result.

Us metalheads can’t get enough of aggressive and energetic music, and the new release from Sydney’s Flaming Wrekage ‘Cathedral of Bones’ delivers us just that!

This is an intense assault of no-nonsense heavy modern thrash with a good dose of death and groove in for good measure. Just check out the latest video for ‘The Voiceless’ and you’ll get the idea!

The first thing that smacks you in the face is the killer guitar tone, which manages to be filthy and dirty whilst still being super clear to showcase the quality of their riffs. Some slick dual-harmony solos in there too! And no clean vocals here, this is straight up heavy aggressive stuff.

The production is top notch, excellent performances all round and a great sound overall. And that album cover, damn that’s some badass artwork!

Flaming Wrekage have been going from strength to strength since their incarnation in 2010. An extremely hard working act that has toured relentlessly within Australia and overseas. Their fanbase and reputation has grown rapidly, which will undoubtably skyrocket with their awesome third album, ‘Cathedral of Bones’.

Adelaide's Hidden Intent have been thrashing thy heads for the best part of 10 years now & continue to improve as the years roll on. Whilst certainly not reinventing any wheels here, 'Dead End Destiny' triumphantly ticks all the right boxes for a thrash metal album. Fast riffs, triplet feels, heavy palm muting, blazing solos, fast percussive beats, gang vocals & solid smattering of groove. There is an element of party thrash & the fun side associated with that, but only in parts. 'Get A Dog Up Ya' showcases that side with a good dose of ocker slang.

A theme the band has been running & having a laugh with in the past few years & also depicted in the very chuckle worthy album art. The first single 'Breaking Point' is a definite highlight that will be worthy of a violent headbang or windmill in a live setting. Catchy riffs, driving drums, a great chorus build up & added with a nice acoustic piece at the end, it's a very well rounded song.

As you progress through the album you'll definitely find a tilt of the hat & a wink of an eye to such beasts as Slayer, Testament, Sacred Reich & Destruction, which by all means is a positive aspect, especially when it's been executed as good as it has been here.

Well produced, well written & well played, 'Dead End Destiny' boasts 7 new tracks & a couple of covers to boot in The Chats 'Pubfeed' & Slayer's 'Altar Of Sacrifice'

All in all, this is another tremendous slab of Aussie thrash metal & a worthy addition to the collection.
