We got a good one here folks. The three miscreants outta Perth creating FLATUS have been quietly delivering studio material for the last 6 years or so, and building their name as a Carcass-worship act. However, their latest effort THWOMP! proves that over these years their sound has been developing into something of their own, and something very very cool.
With the member’s backgrounds in death, grind and black metal, these three genres vividly come through in the songwriting of THWOMP! more than ever. This is where it works nicely with the Carcass influenced chord progressions and vocal stylings, as we now just get a taste of that delicious sound but strangely enough it has a unique and identifiable touch to it.
Whilst this is no doubt a heavy grinding release, there are some absolute masterful melodeath-styled and black metal melodies that really seem to take FLATUS to the next level. The Carcass influence is well and truly embedded (Just soak up that intro to ‘Celebrity Heads’, and even a cover of ‘Swarming Vulgar Mass Of Infected Virulency’), but there ain’t no mistaking this is something of their own.
There is plenty to digest, and some super killer sections that make you want to listen over and over again. Just check out the bustling riffs, unexpected melodies, and desperate howls in the ‘The Sophomoric Subjugation Of Spondulicks’, or the broken black metal chords straight into tasty licks and grindy grooves in the ‘Bubonic Boogie’. Then topping it all off with the relentless extremities of ‘Molecular Cauterisation & Cranial Chernobyl’.
Perhaps one of the standout things with this release, is that you can tell these blokes are having a good time. The themes and lyrics are quirky, artwork is trippy, the samples sit well, the recording sounds fun, and the overall vibe is an absolute winner.
Ripper Effort. Hard to fault. 10 thumbs up from me.
