Labelling themselves as 'outlaw' grind, Melbourne's Choof are an abrasive bunch to say the least.
Their awesomely titled debut EP ‘Dimwitted Amoral Exploitation’ has just been released, and with 8 songs clocking in at around 14 mins, they ain't mucking around at getting their point across.
Lyrically, it's some left of centre shit and this EP is a collection of some pretty rugged stuff such as serial killers, human cruelty, necrophiles & exorcisms. Certainly suits the corrosive nature of the music.
First track 'Blasphemous Execution' kicks off on a dire black metal sounding intro, before exploding in an all out grind / punk frenzy and before you know it, the opening track is done.
Phew. Next up is the first single and video to be released 'Yoghurt Cups'. A coarsley discordant grooved out nasty minute of music. My ear aches.
'Mortuary Rats', dare I say is the catchiest track on the EP, with the middle section of the song conjuring a need to bang the head and push people around. Track highlight for me.
Rest of the EP winds around a path of fast punk, discordant grind, power violence all intermingled with spots of sludgy groove. It's certainly raw, but the recording has been produced well enough for riff clarity.
Vocally it's a trade off of harsh ear piercing shrieking and some kind of munged out yelling, which is highly entertaining and I can only picture how good these guys would be to see live.
All in, a painfully good and fun listen.
7/10
